What is a laparoscopic hysterectomy?

A laparoscopic hysterectomy is an advanced surgical procedure in which the uterus is removed (either completely or partially) through very small incisions in the abdomen using a camera and precision instruments, instead of traditional open surgery.

Laparoscopy is considered more advanced because:
• It causes less pain
• It requires a shorter recovery period
• It leaves very small scars
• It reduces the risks of major surgery

Types of laparoscopic hysterectomy

1.    Total hysterectomy
Removal of the uterus and cervix together.
2.    Supracervical hysterectomy
Removal of the uterus only, leaving the cervix intact.
3.    Hysterectomy with removal of the ovaries and fallopian tubes
Performed when there are tumors or other problems that require it.

When is laparoscopic hysterectomy recommended?

It is used when other treatments have failed or the patient's condition is advanced, such as:
Severe and chronic uterine bleeding
Large or multiple fibroids
Advanced endometriosis
Pelvic organ prolapse
Tumors or the possibility of malignancy (depending on evaluation)
Chronic pelvic pain that does not respond to treatment

How is the procedure performed?

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia.

Three to four small incisions are made in the abdomen to insert:
• A surgical endoscope camera
• Precision instruments for removing the uterus

The surgeon carefully separates the uterus from the ligaments and blood vessels.

It is removed whole or in pieces through one of the incisions or through the vagina (depending on the type of procedure).

The small openings are sutured with cosmetic stitches.
Duration of the procedure: 1–3 hours, depending on the case.
Chronic pelvic pain that does not respond to treatment

Advantages of laparoscopic hysterectomy

Much less pain than open surgery
Less bleeding
Quick recovery (one to two weeks)
Short hospital stay (usually one day)
Very small scars and better cosmetic results
Lower risk of post-operative adhesions

What happens after the operation?

Patients are usually discharged within 24 hours
Light activities can be resumed within a week
Heavy exercise can be resumed after 4–6 weeks
Refrain from sexual intercourse for approximately 6 weeks
Light bleeding or normal discharge may occur for several weeks

Does the menstrual cycle continue after a hysterectomy?

No, because the uterus is responsible for menstruation.
If the ovaries are also removed, the woman immediately enters menopause.
If the ovaries remain, hormones continue normally without a period.

Can I get pregnant after the operation?

Pregnancy cannot occur after a hysterectomy, because the uterus is where the fetus grows.

Possible risks (rare)

Infection
Bleeding
Injury to the bladder or intestines
Blood clots (rare with laparoscopy)
Adhesions (much less common than with open surgery)

Is treatment expensive?
Treatment can be more expensive than other simpler methods, but not all couples need IVF straight away; doctors always try to choose the most suitable and least expensive methods first, if possible.
Can I exercise during treatment?
You can often continue with light activities, but it is best to avoid strenuous exercise or intense sports during the stimulation period or after embryo transfer, as directed by your doctor.
Could I be eligible for intrauterine insemination (IUI) before IVF?
Yes. In some cases where fertility is not completely impaired, intrauterine insemination (IUI) may be the first treatment option before moving on to IVF if it is unsuccessful.
When can I take a pregnancy test after embryo transfer?
A blood pregnancy test is usually performed about 10-14 days after embryo transfer to confirm pregnancy.
