What is IVF?

IVF is an assisted reproductive technology in which an egg is fertilized with sperm outside the woman’s body in a specialized laboratory, and then the embryo is transferred back into the woman’s uterus to continue the pregnancy naturally.

Steps in the IVF process

1) Ovarian stimulation
•    The doctor administers hormone injections to stimulate the ovaries to produce several eggs instead of just one.
•    Growth is monitored by ultrasound and tests.

2) Egg retrieval
• This is a simple procedure performed under light anesthesia, in which the eggs are retrieved through the vagina using a needle.

3) In vitro fertilization
•    The eggs are placed with the sperm in special dishes for fertilization.
•    Alternatively, a sperm is injected directly into the egg (this is called intracytoplasmic sperm injection, or ICSI).

4) Embryo formation
    •    After fertilization, the eggs begin to divide and form an embryo within 3–5 days.

5) Embryo transfer to the uterus
    •    One or more embryos are transferred to the woman’s uterus using a thin catheter without anesthesia.

6) Pregnancy follow-up
•    After 10–14 days, a pregnancy test is performed to confirm the success of the procedure.

When is IVF recommended?

Blocked fallopian tubes
Severe sperm abnormalities
Failure of intrauterine insemination (IUI)
Advanced maternal age (often over 38 years old)
Advanced endometriosis
Poor ovarian reserve

Is treatment expensive?
Treatment can be more expensive than other simpler methods, but not all couples need IVF straight away; doctors always try to choose the most suitable and least expensive methods first, if possible.
Can I exercise during treatment?
You can often continue with light activities, but it is best to avoid strenuous exercise or intense sports during the stimulation period or after embryo transfer, as directed by your doctor.
Could I be eligible for intrauterine insemination (IUI) before IVF?
Yes. In some cases where fertility is not completely impaired, intrauterine insemination (IUI) may be the first treatment option before moving on to IVF if it is unsuccessful.
When can I take a pregnancy test after embryo transfer?
A blood pregnancy test is usually performed about 10-14 days after embryo transfer to confirm pregnancy.
