What is sex selection?

Sex selection is the choice of the sex of a fetus before conception or before it is returned to the mother’s womb, and is usually done within assisted reproduction programs (such as IVF).

Approved medical methods for sex selection

1) Sex selection via IVF + genetic testing (PGD/PGS)

This is the most accurate and popular method.

How is it done?
1.    Perform IVF to produce embryos in the laboratory.
2.    Take a small sample from each embryo (a few cells).
3.    Examine the chromosomes to determine the sex of each embryo (XX female – XY male).
4.    Select the embryo of the desired sex and return it to the uterus.

Accuracy rate:

✔ Up to 99%.

Used for:
•    Desire to choose the sex.
•    Avoiding genetic diseases associated with a specific sex.
•    Family planning.

2) Determining sex by natural methods (low accuracy)

Such as:
•    Timing intercourse after or before ovulation
•    Changing diet
•    Alkaline/acidic vaginal environment

❌ These methods are not scientifically proven and are only 50–60% accurate, which is similar to chance.

Is sex selection always allowed?

It varies depending on:
• Country laws
• Doctor’s opinion
• Reason (medical or personal desire)

In some countries, it is only permitted to prevent genetic diseases.

FAQs About The Service

There are many questions about the service, we have selected frequently asked questions about this service. If you do not see your answer, please contact us.

Is treatment expensive?
Treatment can be more expensive than other simpler methods, but not all couples need IVF straight away; doctors always try to choose the most suitable and least expensive methods first, if possible.
Can I exercise during treatment?
You can often continue with light activities, but it is best to avoid strenuous exercise or intense sports during the stimulation period or after embryo transfer, as directed by your doctor.
Could I be eligible for intrauterine insemination (IUI) before IVF?
Yes. In some cases where fertility is not completely impaired, intrauterine insemination (IUI) may be the first treatment option before moving on to IVF if it is unsuccessful.
When can I take a pregnancy test after embryo transfer?
A blood pregnancy test is usually performed about 10-14 days after embryo transfer to confirm pregnancy.
